Perigord colours

We are situated in the North-East corner of the Dordogne, the 3rd largest department in France, whose capital is Périgueux.

"Périgord" is the ancient name for the area and is still used to describe the differences in landscapes within the department.

We are in the Périgord Vert, probably the most varied landscape of the 4, its meadows interspersed with good areas of deciduous woodland and deep river valleys.

It is also the least populated and off the beaten tourist track, making it a peaceful and relaxing area in which to spend your holiday.

15 km away is our nearest town is Thiviers (left), the self-proclaimed “Foie Gras Capital” of the Dordogne.

Slightly larger and 20 km away is St-Yrieix-la-Perche (below), in the neighbouring Haute-Vienne.

Both towns offer several larger supermarkets, restaurants and many other smaller shops.

Jumilhac chateau

With its impressive château (right) overlooking a square with a fountain, restaurants, cafés and other small shops, including a general store and 2 boulangeries, Jumilhac-le-Grand is only 8km from us.

Perigueux market

The department as a whole has a number of other beautiful and interesting towns and villages.

I have inserted links to many of these on our links page, along with links to other websites that describe the area in much more detail.

As well as these, there are many châteaux, gardens, caves and leisure lakes to visit within an hour or so.

Périgueux is the departmental capital and is well worth a visit, especially on market days (see left).

Just under an hour away, it is full of small shops, many of them independent rather than chain stores. There is also a very good selection of cafés, bars and restaurants in this area, many with outside tables.
